New Year's Day in Amsterdam
New Year's Day is an important festival in Holland. Banks and offices are closed. Many attractions are also closed.
Many stores close their doors, but not all, especially in central Amsterdam. It's a day when you can relax in a park, with friends or family. A good place to start the New Year in the best possible way.
Good Friday
On the Friday before Easter, attractions and stores open to the public. Amsterdamers celebrate Good Friday with family and friends. share local specialities over big meals.
If you're in town during this period and want to visit a restaurant, I'd advise you to reserve your table in advance. Indeed, some families take advantage of this day to eat out and enjoy a moment of sharing.
Holidays in Amsterdam: Easter
In the Netherlands, Easter consists of 2 official public holidays: Easter Day 1 and Easter Day 2. The first Easter day is always a Sunday, the second a Monday.
On the first day of Easter, attractions are normally open. Many supermarkets are also open. Second Easter Day, only the banks are closing.
During the Easter weekend, accommodation can be harder to find. Many Dutch people take advantage of the Easter weekend to visit the city.
King's Day
It's King Willem Alexander's birthday. This is celebrated every April 27. If April 27 is a Sunday, King's Day is moved to Saturday April 26.
In the Netherlands, everyone is free to sell things outside on the street. Amsterdam is famous for its huge party on this day, attracting up to half a million visitors.
All the downtown is full of people, especially the old center and the Jordaan.
The color of the day is orange Royal Palace is also known as the House of Orange. So it's not unusual to see people dressed in orange.
Stores and many attractions close. However, you'll be able to spend your day at most celebrations taking place all over the city.
Amsterdam Labour Day
May 1ᵉʳ is not a public holiday in Holland. However, the day is listed as the national Labor Day. While most Dutch people work at this time, you may find some of them in the bars in town in the evening.
Pentecost
As with Easter, this celebration consists of 2 consecutive public holidays, Sunday and Monday.
This holiday is not much celebrated in the Netherlands. Most stores and attractions open as usual. However, banks generally remain closed during this period.
Holidays in Amsterdam: Christmas
Noël also has 2 public holidays: December 25 and December 26. On Christmas Day itself (December 25), many attractions, stores and restaurants close.
Some Amsterdam supermarkets open during the vacations, especially in the city center. At Christmas, and in the period leading up to it, you can enjoy markets in town.
In the latter, you'll find a wide range of objects that make great gifts for your loved ones.
New Year's Eve
December 31 is not a public holiday, so stores are open. Attractions may have different opening hours, and they often close earlier than normal.
On December 31st, between 8pm and midnight, there's no public transport. Nor are there any trains! So I advise you to book a hotel in the city center, so you can hit the bars and enjoy the evening's festivities. New Year's Eve. As in every city in the world, there are also fireworks displays in town.
With Amsterdam's many public holidays, you can celebrate with the locals and spend some quality time with them. an exceptional moment in this Dutch city.
