Amsterdam is famous for its canals, and the best way to see them is by boat. A canal tour is a fantastic way to see the city and get your bearings on the first day.
Many companies offer tours with audio commentary, so you know what you're looking at. Tours last about 60 to 90 minutes.
See the sunflowers at the Van Gogh Museum
Visit Van Gogh museum has the world's largest collection of the painter's works, including the famous sunflowers, self-portraits and the magnificent almond blossoms.
Children can take part in a treasure hunt or collect Vincent's "Valise de voyage", a suitcase filled with objects to learn more about the paintings. You can book a guided family tour or take advantage of the museum's fun interactive audio tour.
The Van Gogh Museum opens daily 9 am to 5 pm, until 10 pm on Fridays.
See the doll's house at the Rijksmuseum
The magnificent Rijksmuseum boasts an impressive collection of 17th-century Dutch art, including paintings by Vermeer and Rembrandt.
It's a vast museum, so it's best to limit visits with children to a few highlights. Petronella Oortman's dolls' house is furnished with tortoiseshell cabinets, Chinese porcelain and real silver plates.
The Rijksmuseum opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
Eating pancakes all day long
