Where can I find a cab in Amsterdam?
In Amsterdam, there are more of bicycles and tramway than cabs in the city, unlike what you're used to in Europe's major capitals.
But that doesn't mean it's hard to find a cab in Amsterdam. They're easy to spot with their blue license plates and you can :
- Waving to them in the street
- Book one by calling one of the official cab companies
- Approach a driver at one of the cab ranks located near the city's squares and major monuments, such as the Amsterdam museumsaround Central Station or around the Royal Palace
Good to know the best-known and least expensive company is called Cab Centrale Amsterdam (TCA) and you'll see this symbol on the red and black panels on the roofs of our vehicles.
How much does a cab cost in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is considered a paradise for cyclists...which means that cars are rarer than elsewhere. The same applies to cabs, and in fact, this means of transport is expensive.
Very expensive indeedAmsterdam's cabs are said to be the most expensive in Europe! On average, you should expect to pay at least 10 euros for a journey, but the bill rarely drops below 15 euros.
Pricing is as follows:
- Support : 3.60 euros (for 2 km)
- Price per km (day and night) : 2.66 euros
- Waiting time per minute : 0.44 euros

- From the main station to Rikjsmusem price : 15.80 euros
- From the main station to the Anne Franck House13 euros

What kind of cabs are available in Amsterdam?
There are several types of Taxi in Amsterdam, which I've listed below.
The classic cab
These are normal cabs, with a blue license plate and black, gray or white cars, usually sedans.
Normally, rates are displayed on small placards both inside and outside the vehicle.
Other cabs
Electric cabs, luxury vehicles, vansetc. There are other options for travelers who want a cab.
You can take advantage of them either with the TCA company mentioned above, or with one of the other serious Amsterdam cab agencies such as Staxi, Taxi Direct Amsterdam, Cabbie or Taxistad.
Bicycle cab
Amsterdam's most original cabs include, of course bicycle cabs. These are a kind of tricycle in which two people can sit together and be guided by a driver who pedals for you.
Nice and cheaper than cab fares, which cost around 1 euro/min.

How to use a cab in Amsterdam
There are no real differences in terms of taking a cab in the capital of the Netherlands, except at cab ranks.
In general, it's customary to take the first cab in line, but that's not the case here. You're welcome to tour the drivers and choose the one with the best price.
How do I call a cab?
The easiest way to book a cab is through the company TCA31(0)20 7777777.
It has 1,200 cabs and over 1,500 driverswhich means you don't have to wait very long.
How common are scams with Amsterdam cabs?
Scams aren't common, but they do happen in Amsterdam.
Visit downtownit's all about the main station that crooked drivers take over tourists who come along and take advantage of the euphoria of discovery to gouge on prices.
But the most common scams take place when the patient is picked up at Amsterdam Schiphol airport ! If the basic price (minimum 45 euros) is already high, beware of bogus cabs and opt instead for a safe solution, such as :
- a trip in shuttle private (most comfortable option)
- the express train which takes just 16 minutes to reach the station (the most convenient option)
What are the cheapest ways to get around Amsterdam?

You may be wondering whether Uber (or any other VTC service) is a viable option for getting around Amsterdam. Yes, bearing in mind that fares are more or less the same as those charged by cabs.
Public transport
Amsterdam has an accessible public transport network, including buses, tourist busstreetcar, ferry and 5 metro lines.
While the basic unit fare may seem daunting, you should know that you can use all public transport systems on an unlimited basis with I Amsterdam City Card !
