House of Bols in Amsterdam: article summary
House of Bols: a bar and interactive museum
The experience is essentially an interactive museum offering a free audio tour through a number of exhibition rooms, ending at the bar where you receive a complimentary cocktail. The audio guide is available in 5 languages: English, Dutch, French, German and Spanish.
The museum's rooms contain a number of different themes. First, there's an introduction to Luca Bols, Bols Liquers and Genièvre.
You then head for the Hall of Bowls, featuring a collection of Delft earthenware. These are replicas of special buildings and monuments in the Netherlands and are offered to KLM First and World Business Class passengers since 1952.
Perhaps the most fascinating part of the tour is testing your sense of smell with dozens of colorful flavors. Then you're off to discover the ingredients that make up jenever.
Finally, you'll pass through the history room and discover the traditional processes of percolation, maceration and distillation.
Depending on your level of engagement with the interactive elements, the tour can last between 20 and 45 minutes. At the end, you can pick up your free cocktail at the Mirror bar, prepared by one of the bartenders. Please note that the number of seats in the bar is limited.
