Huis Marseille: originally a French house
The house at 401 Keizersgracht was commissioned by a wealthy French merchant named Isaac Focquier and built in 1665.
If you look closely at the façade above the windows, you will see a stone plaque with a representation of the port of Marseille.
In 1676, Focquier was declared bankrupt and had to sell the property.
A monument bought back by the city
In the 1990s, the house was purchased by the De Pont Museum (Tilburg) and restored. It opened its doors to the public in 1999 as Huis Marseille, the first Amsterdam Museum of Photography.
In 2013, the museum effectively grew in size thanks to the acquisition of the adjacent house.
Huis Marseille: exceptional interiors
Huis Marseille contains 14 exhibition spaces and a library. As you enter the museum, you'll see impressive stuccowork on the ceiling of the entrance hall.
The salon ceiling also features a magnificent painting by the famous Dutch painter Jacob de Wit (1695-1754).
There's an elegant garden to the rear with a small restored house, now used as one of the exhibition spaces.
Last but not least, the garden boasts numerous seats and benches, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.
A wide variety of exhibitions
The facility organizes around 4 different photographic exhibitions a year (changing every 3 months or so). covering a variety of photographic genres.
The museum's main focus is on "photography as an artistic medium", often featuring more avant-garde artists illustrating relevant social themes.
There is a small bookshop in the museum which offers a selection of photo books and other items.
Please note that the museum does not have a café, and the building is not fully accessible to wheelchair users.

A special one-hour guided tour is available by appointment for a maximum of 15 people.
This is the museum for you if you're interested in photography, or if you just want to take a look inside and discover a large, traditional house. its garden overlooking one of Amsterdam's canals.

The venue opens :
- Every day 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On Thursdays, the museum closes at 9 pm.
How much does it cost to enter the museum?
You can visit the site to :
- 12,50 € per adult
- 6,50 € for seniors over 65 and students
Admission is free for children aged 0 to 17, holders of the Museumkaart and I Amsterdam City Card.
How do I get there?
Getting here couldn't be easier. The Huis Marseille museum is located on the Keizersgracht canal, a few steps from Leidsestraat.
Since the Amsterdam Central Stationtake them tramways 2, 11 or 12 to Keizersgracht. You'll be there in no time.
