Museum of the human body in Amsterdam: article summary
Museum of the human body in Amsterdam: see real human bodies
Visiting the Body Worlds Amsterdam exhibition is not like visiting any other museum.
In the Body World exhibition, human cadavers are not called "corpses". Instead, these are "plastinates".
They are no longer human bodies, which gives us permission to consider them as objects for our education and/or entertainment.
Bodies between object and human remnant
At the same time, the creators of these "objects" seem to assert the opposite. For them, the body transformed into a work of art remains human.
Although none of the plastinates, not even the full-body ones, are presented with intact skin, the creators have nevertheless left key signs of their humanity.
They left the skin intact all around:
- Eyebrows
- Eyes
- Nostrils
The ears are whole and the lips remain. This inevitably leads the viewer to think of them as human beings.
