Ij Hallen Flea Market: at a glance
The IJ-Hallen is a huge flea market in Amsterdam that sells almost everything. Once a month, two warehouses house 750 stalls selling :
- Second-hand clothes
- Shoes
- Antiques
- Jewelry
- Some books
- Furniture.
Booths will also be set up in the outdoor space between the two buildings. This market attracts new vendors every year, to the delight of locals and tourists alike.
Close to downtown
A quick trip by ferry since Amsterdam Central takes you to a treasure trove of bargains and finds.
The neighborhood is packed with market stalls, people, food stalls and an eclectic atmosphere. For a fun and economical adventure, IJ-Hallen is a must!
A few tips for good bargains
You can't miss a good deal in this market. However, let me give you a few useful tips.
First of all, I advise you to bring a backpack or extra bags with you to carry your purchases. Not all vendors will be not able to provide a bag for your purchases.
Then remember to take some loose change. The vendors are itinerant and don't have card machines. Change is the only way you can buy one of your finds at the Ij Hallen Market.
The importance of arriving on time
In winter, it can get cold in the market aisles, so I suggest you wear warm clothes.
If you're determined to make this special discovery, it's best to arrive early. That way you can get the best deals before anyone else.
If you're looking for bargains, Sunday afternoons are the best time to shop at IJ-Hallen. Vendors usually start discounting their stock an hour before closing time, so they don't have to take everything home with them.
