If channels are veins, the Leidseplein is the beating heart of Amsterdam. Every evening, masses of tourists and locals get together to watch a match and party.
The atmosphere is truly unique, especially in spring and summer. The ideal location, between Central Station and the museum district, draws visitors directly onto the Leidseplein.
It's not uncommon for travel guides to mention the Leidseplein solely for its nightlife. In reality, the square is also worth a look during the day.
Leidseplein during the day
There's a lot of traffic on the Leidseplein in the middle of the day.
Two major streetcar lines cross here. Around the square, you'll find street artists, cafés and fast-food chains. The Leidseplein is Amsterdam's second-largest center after the station district.
How do I get to Leidseplein?
The square is about a 30-minute walk from the main railway station. The route takes you via Dam Square and Rokin to the south of Amsterdam. On the last section of the trail, you cross the three main channels. A great way to start your day.
Of course, you can also get there by streetcar. Lines 1, 2 and 5 leave from the main station every 2-3 minutes. The route to Leiden Square takes about 15 minutes.
What to see in the area
The area around Leidseplein is full of exciting sights: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark... You'll never get bored in this neighborhood!
When you've finished sightseeing and would like to have a bite to eat, there's also plenty of options to choose from!
Directly on Leidseplein, you'll find numerous bars and pubs. Most of them have terraces. When it's cold outside, it's still warm inside. As it's important to party on a full stomach, you'll have you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining here.
The area around Leidseplein is a veritable gastronomic paradise. Especially the crossroads between "Lange Leidsedwarsstraat" and "Korte Leidsedwarsstraat". This area is packed with excellent restaurants: steaks, burgers, pastas, Indian curries and authentic Asian cuisine at fair prices.
Wok To Walk
Fresh, authentic and delicious, watch the chefs cook your dishes live in the wok. Spring rolls, fried noodles and rice with delicious sauces are on the menu. Wok To Walk serves excellent wok creations to suit all tastes.

Here you'll find the best steaks on Leidseplein. Among the countless steakhouses on Leidseplein, Alberto's la Forge is the best. Since 1985, the team has been offering exceptional quality at reasonable prices.
Many locals love the warm atmosphere. My tip: order the hearty grill platter with a variety of meats and side dishes.

Sherpa Restaurant
Here, you can look forward to the delights of the Indian, Tibetan and Nepalese cuisine. Prices are not too expensive and service is excellent.

After a bite to eat, you can head off to one of the square's bars. A great way to start your evening in Amsterdam.
The Waterhole
Do you like music, cocktails and cold beer? At the Waterhole, you'll find it all. Different bands play every day. In the evenings, it's very busy and lively. Happy hour is from 2 pm to 9 pm. All you need to prepare for your night in Amsterdam.
Hoopman Irish Pub
A real Irish pub and a great place to sit outside and watch life on the square. On the menu you'll find typical Irish bar dishes such as fish and chips and Shepherd's Pie.
Inside, everything is covered in dark wood. Freshly drawn Guinness is twice as delicious in such comfortable surroundings.
NJOY Cocktailbar
NJOY's bartenders are true professionals, and the cocktail list is endless. You have to ring the doorbell to get in. The bar is selective, I'd advise you to dress appropriately if you want to get in.
