Here we go!
Milieuzone in Amsterdam: article summary
Milieuzone in Amsterdam: what types of environmental zones are there??
An environmental zone, or milieuzone in Dutch, is an area of a city where certain types of vehicle are prohibited.
The purpose of these zones is :
- Reduce air pollution
- From protecting public health
- Improve residents' overall quality of life
Two zones in the heart of Amsterdam
Amsterdam currently has two environmental zones:
- the Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
- the Clean Air Zone (CAZ)
The LEZ was introduced in 2008 and restricts access to diesel-powered vehicles that do not meet Euro 4 emissions standards.
The CAZ, introduced in 2019, is a stricter zone that restricts the entry of all diesel-powered vehicles that do not meet Euro 6 emissions standards.
In addition, all gasoline-powered vehicles that do not meet the Euro 4 are also prohibited from entering the CAZ.
Where are Amsterdam's environmental zones??
The A10 is the boundary of the environmental zone.
However, there are exceptions. There are three exceptions within the A10 where the environmental zone does not apply:
- Le Coen
- The Vlothaven
- The dock in Mercuriushaven
- The western part of the port area on the banks of the IJ at Amsterdam Nord
- RAI P+R entrance
- The south entrance to the RAI stand builders
Milieuzone in Amsterdam: vehicle control
Restrictions in environmental zones are controlled by surveillance cameras and automatic license plate recognition systems.
Fines for violating restrictions in environmental zones can range from 90 to 230 euros, depending on vehicle type and emission level.
There are a few exceptions to the restrictions in environmental zones. Emergency vehicles, such as police cars and ambulances, may enter the zones, whatever their emissions.
In addition, vehicles used for specific purposes, such as construction or delivery vehicles, may benefit from exemptions if they meet certain requirements.
What impact do environmental zones have on quality of life in Amsterdam??
Amsterdam's environmental zones have had a significant impact on the city's air quality.
According to a study conducted by the city, the introduction of the LEZ in 2008 resulted in a 20 % reduction in particulate matter and a 10 % reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions.
The CAZ, which is a stricter zone, should have an even greater impact on air quality.
A significant change in customs
Environmental zones have also encouraged residents to adopt more sustainable modes of transport, such as cycling and public transport.
Amsterdam is famous for its extensive network of bicycle paths and efficient public transit system.
By making access to the city center more difficult for cars, environmental zones have helped to create a more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly environment.
Overall, the introduction of Milieuzone in Amsterdam for cars has been a positive step towards reducing air pollution and improving residents' quality of life. By imposing restrictions on high-emission vehicles, the city is sending a clear message about its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.
