Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam: at a glance
Almost every day, especially during the hot summer months, you'll find a few stalls selling jewelry or fresh produce at the Nieuwmarkt.
However, the soul of the market is awakened at weekends. During this period, the cafés and restaurants of the Nieuwmarkt are full to bursting.
Visitors stop to refresh themselves during their shopping spree, or simply relax on one of the many terraces and watch market life unfold before them.
This place Amsterdam that you must discover..
The history of Nieuwmarkt
The New Market Square (Nieuwmarkt) has been an Amsterdam market since the 17th century, when farmers came here to sell produce from their plots on the square just inside the St. Anthony Gate.
Over the centuries, the layout of the city has changed so that Nieuwmarkt is no longer at the edge of the city limits, but almost in the center.
The Porte Saint-Antoine has also changed a lot: the gatehouse, the picturesque building known as De Waag, was once a weighing room, a medical school and now a restaurant.
The use of the square has changed little and it's still home to some of Amsterdam's most famous markets.
Fresh produce every week
Every Saturday of the year, the Nieuwmarkt returns to the old Amsterdam market it was meant to be, as stalls selling organic produce return to the square.
In this market, you can buy fresh vegetables and flowers directly from growers.
The choice may not be as wide as at Amsterdam's famous flower markets, but it's certainly less crowded.
As well as buying fruit and vegetables, you'll find a number of stalls here where you can buy refreshments during your walk.
I recommend the stalls selling freshly squeezed orange juice. It's delicious. If you want to eat, other places offer corn on the cob, boiled in front of you and coated in rich, salty butter. A real healthy pleasure at your fingertips.
