What's it for?
Ov Chipkaart is a rechargeable transport card which saves users the hassle of buying individual tickets for their journeys. Simply load the card with the required balance and validate it when you use it:
- Buses
- Streetcars
- The metro
- Trains on the Dutch rail network (NS)
- Some water buses
Where can it be used?
The great strength of this transport card, is that it can be used all over the country !
Whether you want to visit Amsterdam, go to Volendam, à Marken, à The Hague or elsewhere, this is an extremely practical solution.
Where and how to buy this OV Chipkaart?
There are several ways to purchase OV Chipkaart.
The first is to buy directly from one of the automatic machines (GVB) which you'll find at the city's main subway/transport stations. You can also buy them at tobacconists and in certain stores.
Good to know the official platform a device to help you locate the nearest sales outlet.
Alternatively, you can order a card with your first and last names online, which is more attractive for residents than for tourists.
Anonymous OV Chipkaart and personal OV-chipkaart: what's the difference?
There are two types of Chipkaart OV: the Anonymous version and the Personal version.
The first (OV Chipkaart Anonymous) is best suited to a touristic stayIt can be shared between several travelers, and recharged with small amounts.
The second (Personal OV-chipkaart) is a personalized transport card featuring your photo and contact details. It can only be purchased online, and is mainly intended for local people/long-term residents.
How does the OV Chipkaart work?
This transport card is very easy to use! Please read the following information to be prepared for any eventuality.
Reload balance
Simply go to a kiosk or point of sale. to credit the desired balance to the OV Chipkaart cardvia your credit card. You can even pay €10, €20, €30 or €50, depending on your needs and your propensity to use public transport.
The minimum amount required for a trip is 4€ (for public transport) and 20€ if you travel on the NS network. This acts as a deposit.
Validation
Paging the card in and out of each transport, so that it can be debited.
The rate is that in force on the networkwith a Pay as you go You pay per journey with a basic rate, then according to the distance travelled, based on the rates in force by zone/city/region.
What are the risks of traveling without a ticket?
Any violation can cost you dearly, with a fine of up to 50€ + travel price. Negotiations are out of the question here, as the agents will be uncompromising.
Good to know: from the age of 4, you have to pay for public transport.
What to do with the remaining balance?
You can recover remaining balance on OV ChipKaartby performing a request on the official website. You'll need the card number, an IBAN, a valid email address and the card's expiry date.
Please note that the card expires 5 years after first use.
Other ways to pay for transport in Amsterdam?
It has recently become possible to pay directly with your bank card on public transport (via the OVPAY). A practical, contactless solution that requires no registration or installation.
To view expenses and associated charges, simply download the OVPay application, available from the PlayStore and AppStore.
Good to know Paying in cash is becoming increasingly difficult in public transport. Make sure you have a bank card/transport card, so you don't get stuck.
