One important thing to consider before renting a houseboat is insurance. It also depends on the canal you're navigating. If you're on a busy Amsterdam canal and you're at the wheel (and have no previous experience), you really need to insure yourself.
In a more isolated area, insurance is an option, but it's not enough. I'd still advise you to take one.. If you've hired a barge with an experienced captain, there's no need to take out insurance - all legal responsibilities rest with the captain.
If you wish to take out insurance, ask for it when you hire the boat. Check for rentals whose vessels are registered with HISWA (National Water Sports Association of the Netherlands).
Paying attention to the franchise
Generally speaking, insurance deductibles are equal to the deposit you pay for the vessel. So, if you pay a €200 deposit and have an accident while driving, expect to pay a €200 deductible.
