What started as a food truck selling homemade Lebanese dishes has evolved into two small family restaurants serving some of the best Middle Eastern wraps, soups and desserts in Amsterdam.
Named after the round grill, called a saj, used to bake flatbreads that encase tasty fillings, the first was an instant success. in the boutique-lined district of Nine Streets.
The second, located on the trendy Utrechtsestraat street, serves the same dishes and booze. Although not places to linger, both are perfect for a quick lunch, dinner or snack to go.
Wraps cost less than €10 and most side dishes and desserts cost less than €5.
Skek
Managed by students, this eco-friendly café located in the Amsterdam's red light district serves organically grown snacks, meals and beverages.
Portions are generous on both lunch and dinner menus, with :
- Hamburgers
- Soups
- Salads
The dishes are served in a dining room that also serves as an art gallery for young talent.
The staff, students in the kitchen, serve and entertain, learning the restaurant trade as they go.
The best part: you won't have to pay the big bill!
Cheap restaurant in Amsterdam: Bird Thais Snackbar
If you're in the mood for Asian flavors, this small restaurant in Amsterdam's Chinatown has been serving up some of the best western Bangkok dishes adapted to Western palates for over two decades.
Working around hot woks in an open kitchen, the chefs prepare :
- Exotic curries
- Meat and vegetarian dishes flavored with Thai basil
- Regional specialities such as yam kai jang
- Laotian-style grilled chicken.
Most of dishes cost less than €15. Best enjoyed at the counter.
Can't find a seat? Try the Bird Thais restaurant across the street, where a fuller menu is served at slightly higher prices.
Le Franggo
In Portuguese, frango means chicken, and this bistro in De Pijp on two levels, with colorful Portuguese tiles, brick walls and rustic wooden tables, cooks it up in every possible way.
Franggo's specialities are available to take away. The establishment offers excellent rates and you can enjoy your chicken on a picnic in nearby Sarphatipark.
Chickens are butterflied, flattened and grilled over hot coals for crispy skin and succulent meat.
Order a half or whole bird, add fries, salad, rice or a baked potato and corn on the cob, and you're ready to go. you'll eat well for around €10.
Cheap restaurant in Amsterdam: Warung Spang Makandra
Indonesian immigrants introduced spicy curries and peanut satay to the Dutch culinary scene in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Some of Amsterdam's most affordable restaurants are served at Warung Spang Makandra at De Pijp, Oost and Nieuw-West.
Open daily for lunch and dinner. On site, you'll find :
- Surinamese sandwiches
- Steaming saoto soup
- Spicy beef rendang served over rice or noodles
Portions are generous and there are many vegetarian options.
Vleminckx Sausmeesters
While the Belgian fries are sold all over AmsterdamThis legendary venue has been serving up some of the best fried food since 1957.
They come with over 25 sauces, from classic mayonnaise to samurai sauce. On the spot, I recommend you try the oorlog saucea new blend of mayonnaise, satay sauce and onions.
Although tucked away in an alleyway near Spui, it's easy to find. Just follow the long queue.

Under a ceiling of red umbrellas, feast on Asian flavors in dishes influenced by :
- Thai women
- Discomfort
- Vietnamese
- Indonesian women

Typical specialities such as steamed ravioli, spring rolls and bao buns are also available. perfect for sharing at lunch or dinner.
Following the success of the original venue in Amsterdam's Oud-West, a second location has opened in De Pijp, with a 14-seat private dining room and a photo booth to immortalize your visit!
