Rijsttafel in Amsterdam: article summary
Rijsttafel in Amsterdam: the Blauw
Blauw has been established for decades. On site, you'll find a two-level interior and bold decoration that avoids the kitsch of all Asian restaurants.
The establishment is located at the bottom of the Vondelpark on the Amstelveenseweg, which means there aren't many tourists. The rijsttafel includes a wide selection of dishes from mild to super-spicy.
Blauw went through a difficult period for a few years when some of its original chefs defected to Ron Gastrobar Indonesia. But the now benefits from a new team that seems to know what it's doing.
The rijsttafel includes classics like boeufrendang and various forms of satay (chicken, goat and shrimp), but also more interesting dishes like fish mousse with a spicy green sauce.
If you have room, don't miss Aneka Laut Lilit's appetizer: crab- and shrimp-flavored cakes bound with cornmeal and served on a lemongrass skewer.
For those with a sweet tooth, Blauw's dessert menu doesn't disappoint, with favorites like spekkoek and mango ice cream, as well as more exotic flavors like durian parfait and chocolate fondant with cayenne pepper.
Tujuh Maret
More centrally, on Utrechtsestraat, you'll find Tujuh Maret. It's a very popular family restaurant in Amsterdam. What's more, it's one of the only establishments of its kind to offer house wine.
The "Minahasa" rijsttafel costs €34.50, which is cheaper than many other restaurants of this type. Despite this price, Tujuh Maret offers a wide choice of properly spiced dishes. On the spot, I recommend you try tempeh. A real delight!
Rijsttafel in Amsterdam: the Ron Gastrobar
Chef Ron Blaauw already owns a string of Amsterdam restaurants offering everything from classic fine dining to oriental specialties.
But it's worth take a trip to Oudekerk aan d'AmstelIt's a 40-minute bike ride from the south of the city center to try the Ron Gastrobar.
Here, Chef Tim is at the helm. His satay is to die for, and the perfectly moist chicken and goat meat will leave you speechless.
The eggs and fried shrimp are perfectly spiced. Finally, all the curries are succulent and have a distinctly different flavor. The wine list and service are just what you'd expect from a gourmet restaurant, but prices are surprisingly modest.
Le Sampurna
The old Sampurna is right in the center of Amsterdam, right next to the bustling flower market on the Singel Canal. It may be full of tourists, but the food is always good and delicious.a reasonable price for the location.
The establishment has been on site for over 35 years. So you can be sure you'll find delicious food on the premises.
Rijsttafel in Amsterdam: Kartika
Kartika is another exceptional Rijsttafel in Amsterdam. Beef rendang with excellent hot spices and a rich, fragrant sauce, not sickening with peanut butter. as is often the case.
I also recommend the chicken dishes available on site. You'll find a spicier version in a fine chili-based broth, and another milder version in a sweet soy-based sauce with lots of aromatic aniseed.
Kartika also serves one of Amsterdam's cheapest rijsttafels, good to know for small budgets.
Le Dèsa
The rijsttafel at Dèsa in De Pijp is good value at just €20.90 for the regular rijsttafel. It includes some good chicken dishes. You'll particularly appreciate spicy ayam rica-rica and chicken with coconut milk and saffron.
However, I'd advise you to leave out the beef rendang. Overall, Dèsa is a very good establishment, especially at this price. The service is also top-notch.
Rijsttafel in Amsterdam: the Mama Makan
Located on the first floor of the luxurious Hyatt Regency hotel, Mama Makan stands out from almost everywhere else on this list for its atmosphere.
With its fresh botanical interior, well-stocked wine list and rijsttafel served as traditional "dishes", this is one Indonesian restaurant you'll want to visit again and again.
The food arrives in five rounds, giving the meal a pleasant rhythm that is usually lacking when eating a rijsttafel. As for the dishes themselves, some are excellent. I recommend the chicken satay, spicy shrimps and sea bass with shallots.
Dessert is also exceptional, with tropical flavors of fruit and creamy coconut.
Finding a Rijsttafel in Amsterdam isn't too difficult. However, if you would like to try this type of restaurant, you can do so in one of the establishments I mentioned earlier.
