Despite the city's reputation as one of the European capitals of homosexuality, the supply of gay sauna in Amsterdam is rather limited.
Today, I'm taking you to the two remaining establishments in the capital.
Gay sauna in Amsterdam: article summary
Gay sauna in Amsterdam: Thermos
In Amsterdam, if you're looking for a gay sauna, you've got to go to Thermos. This sauna has become an essential part of the city's LGBT scene.
Thermos occupies five floors in three interconnected buildings near Leidseplein and concert hall Melkweg.
Previously, Thermos was split into two saunas, Thermos Day and Thermos Night, which are now combined into a single sauna open 365 days a year, 12 a.m. to 8 a.m..
Exclusive care
Thermos has all the facilities you need, and more. What more could you want from the city's largest gay sauna?
It's an ideal place for socializing, as the bar and the sunny roof terrace create a convivial atmosphere.
Those in the mood for relaxation can unwind in the whirlpool, enjoy an invigorating massage, open their pores in the sauna or let the beauty salon staff pamper them with a full treatment.
A moment to take care of your health
In a Dutch gay sauna, health comes first, and Thermos takes this seriously. On the last Sunday of every month, the venue becomes a health hub for Amsterdam's gay community.
The facility offers a vaccination day where visitors can get a free hepatitis B vaccination from the Amsterdam Public Health Department.
Gay sauna in Amsterdam: Damrak
The only other gay sauna in Amsterdam worth mentioning is Sauna Damrak, centrally located just below Central Station.
Damrak opens every day from 12 am to 9 pm.
It proposes:
- Saunas
- Sun loungers
- Jacuzzi
- A steam bath
- A bar
A private sauna, available by appointment for private parties, and masseurs are available on request.
Although gay saunas are few and far between in Amsterdam, the city has no shortage of mixed saunas. Sauna Decco, gay friendly, is well worth a visit if you want to be pampered.
Tips for a sauna break in Amsterdam
Many Amsterdam visitors try new experiences during their stay in the city.
So it's always a good idea to find out the do's and don'ts before jumping headlong into the adventure. Visiting a gay sauna in Amsterdam is no exception.
One of the main rules to bear in mind when visiting a gay sauna is that staff members are not allowed to make advances.
You may be wondering what to wear in an Amsterdam gay sauna. The answer is very simple: wear what you want.
As soon as you enter the sauna, you'll swap your street clothes for a towel, so it doesn't make much difference what you wear to the sauna.
In the sauna itself, towels are the staple, but most saunas allow particularly confident people to be as naked as they like.
Amsterdam's gay saunas are great places to join the city's LGBT community. You can relax and enjoy an exceptional massage in a friendly atmosphere. All the ingredients for an excellent vacation in the Dutch capital.
