During a stay in AmsterdamThere are some places you just can't miss.
Today, I'm taking you on a tour of the most important sites in the capital of the Netherlands.
Staying in Amsterdam: article summary
Discover the Jordaan
Jordaan is a trendy residential district. Although it has become more popular in recent years, it remains one of the city's most neglected neighborhoods.
The district is full of boutiques and of friendly stores, bars, pubs and trendy restaurants.
It's also the part of town where the Dutch painter Rembrandt spent the last years of his life.
It's a quiet place to explore, away from the crowds, if you want to have a better idea of the city outside its main tourist areas.
Stay in Amsterdam: visit the Van Gogh Museum
The museum houses many of Van Gogh's best works. It is also the world's largest collection of works by Van Gogh.
The museum does an excellent job of describing his life, tracing his works from beginning to end so that you can better understand and appreciate his style and evolution.
Opened in 1973, it is one of the city's most popular sites, but don't let that stop you from visiting.
Take a detour to the Anne Frank House
It's one of the most popular tourist sites in the whole city. It is the house where Anne Frank's family went into hiding during the Second World War and describes her childhood and life in the attic.
His handwritten diary is also on display. While it's an important and dark place to visit, it's also incredibly crowded.
You simply walk around the house and never really have time to digest what you see.
Stay in Amsterdam: take a canal tour
Amsterdam is a beautiful and picturesque city, thanks to its canals. You can't visit and not do a tour of the canals.
There are many different tour options to choose from, depending on your tastes.
Self-guided rentals offer small boats for a more intimate and unique experience. This very affordable option is perfect for family time on the water.
Visit the Rijksmuseum
Created in 1798, the Rijksmuseum is an art and history museum located right next to the Van Gogh Museum.
The recently renovated museum features an extensive Rembrandt collection, including the famous painting "La Ronde de nuit".
In addition to works by Rembrandt, the museum also houses a strong collection of other classic Dutch painters, such as Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer.
There are over a million objects in the collection, with more than 8,000 on display, so you can easily spend a few hours there.
Amsterdam: stop off at the Museum of Eroticism
Nestled in a former warehouse in the red light district, the Museum of Eroticism presents an exhibition on eroticism in all its forms through the ages.
It contains :
- Sculptures
- Paintings
- Drawings
- Photographs
Of course, there's also a gift store. if you want a unique souvenir of the city.
Relax at Oosterpark
If you need to get away from the crowds, go to Oosterpark. It's a relaxing green space to the east of the city center, perfect for lounging and enjoying a sunny day.
It is much less popular than the popular Vondelpark and shows you a different, more residential part of the city.
There are sculptures, playgrounds, ponds and plenty of space for picnics and relaxation.
Amsterdam: stroll through the red light district
Unsurprisingly, Amsterdam's red light district is one of the city's main attractions. Although much more docile than in previous years, the Quartier Rouge manages to balance gender with being a major international tourist attraction.
It's pretty calm and quiet during the day, but at night, the neighborhood is packed with drunken revelers and tourists clogging up the sidewalks.
You can't enjoy a stay in Amsterdam without making at least one visit from this list. You'll be able to discover the city from a different angle.
