Tony's Chocolonely in Amsterdam: article summary
What is Tony's Chocolonely in Amsterdam??
Quite simply, it's an excellent chocolate bar available in a wide range of traditional and original flavors. So you can find your specialties in the taste of :
- Cherry meringue
- Orange rosemary
- Popcorn
- White raspberry
- Black milk toffee
- Black pecan
But this fantastic Dutch brand has much more to offer.
An eventful history
The story of this brand is an eventful one. It begins with an investigative journalist called Tony, horrified by how chocolate was produced around the world.
At the time, cocoa plantations depended on child slavery. To raise public awareness, he went on TV and gorged himself on chocolate, with the aim of getting arrested for eating something that had been knowingly produced by illegal means.
Not content with this coup, he contacted several chocolate multinationals and asked them to create a slave-free chocolate bar for him. All ignored him. Nestlé included.
On November 29, 2005, Tony launched the world's only slave-free chocolate bar. Since then, he's made it his mission to get companies around the world to produce slave-free 100 % chocolate.
Tony's Chocolonely in Amsterdam: chocolate bars on sale all over the city
Tony's Chocolonely are on sale throughout the city. Stores such as Marqt and even the ubiquitous Albert Heijn supermarket stock the standard flavors, but these are now available everywhere.
Tony's has two eponymous stores in Amsterdam, as well as a new Chocolate Bar, and plans to build a Willy Wonka-style factory/theme park north of the capital in the future.
A colorful boutique
The original boutique is located underneath their offices in the fabulous Westergas complex at Westerpark.
This is occupied in turn by people who work in the main company, enabling them to be in direct contact with their customers.
They can tell you about the company's overall mission and, of course, there's plenty of chocolate to buy and taste, plus a few goodies.
Please note that the store is closed at lunchtime and at weekends.
A second store closer to Amsterdam's attractions
Then they opened a "Super Store" in the Beurs Van Berlage. It's closer to the center of Amsterdam, in a place that was, in the early 20ᵉ century, the basis of the Dutch cocoa trade.
Best of all, this is where you'll find the "make your own Tony's" machine, where little ones (and grown-ups) can use ipads to create a bespoke bar.
Choose your chocolate, your flavors, the color and the name of your package. All that's left to do is watch your chocolate bar being made.
