How much does transportation cost in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam public transport tickets can be used on any type of public transport for a given duration. A single ticket is called a "one-hour ticket", costs €3.20 and can be used for up to an hour, as long as you remember to check in and check out, no matter how long your journey lasts within that hour.
If you plan to use only public transport, this option can quickly become expensive.
Other options are available depending on the number of days you wish to stay. Unlimited tickets can be purchased for one day up to 7 days.
Affordable tickets for your visit
What's more, these tickets are generally affordable. For one day, they cost just 8 euros. If you'd like to take out an unlimited ticket for seven days, you will be charged €36.
Children under 4 travel free. Children aged 4 to 11 benefit from a substantial discount on their ticket. For example it costs just €4 for children in this age bracket.
Where can I buy tickets?
You can buy your tickets in all train and metro stations. Please note that only a one-hour ticket can be purchased directly from the driver on the streetcar or bus.
In the bus, streetcar or metro, you must validate your ticket at the entrance and check it before leaving the transport. You must do this every time you use public transport.
Amsterdam transport: take the streetcar
Visit tramways cross the city from north to south, east to west. Streetcars are the most common means of transport in Amsterdam, and very easy to spot. They are small blue and white electric trains from GVB.
You can't pay for the ticket in cash, so you have to buy a ticket inside the streetcar with your credit card, or in advance at a station/underground station.
The metro
It's certainly the fastest way to get around. Visit metro also crosses the entire city, and the stations are always located at the busiest spots, making them easy to find. How to use them, you must validate your ticket at the station entrance.
Transport in Amsterdam: the bus
The city also offers a large number of bus and it's an excellent option for reaching places not covered by streetcar or metro. Buses don't accept cash either, and you can pay by debit card, day ticket or previously purchased transport card.
Take the boat
This is an option for those who want to see Amsterdam from another angle! Boat trips on Amsterdam's canals are a must, and you can buy group or private tours. River transport takes you through the city's canals. Perfect for a romantic day out in Amsterdam.
The bike
As we've seen, there are many ways to get around Holland. However, we mustn't forget the country's most popular means of transport: the bike!
You can rent bikes for a set period or even by the day. Some hotels offer this service. It's worth asking your concierge. There are many rental stores in the city and they're really easy to find.
Amsterdam transport is very easy to use. You can take advantage of them by paying a single ticket or by taking a daily or weekly pass. In this way, you can adapt your journey and spend only what you need.
