Visit Tropenmuseum is one of Amsterdam's most intriguing and impressive museums.

The museum is located in Amsterdam's Plantage district, east of the city center and close to the Oosterpark. It is housed in a beautiful old building dating from 1926.
It is part of the umbrella organization of the National Museum of World Cultures, along with other museums such as the Museum Volkenkunde (Leiden), the Africa Museum (Berg en Dal) and the Wereldmuseum (Rotterdam).
The Tropenmuseum entrance hall is located in the basement. The exhibits themselves are spread over 3 levels around the imposing Great Hall (Lichthal), which forms the heart of the museum and is the largest of its kind in the world. used for events and activities.

The Tropenmuseum boasts a rich collection of objects from many exotic regions of the world. Prior to 2018, museum exhibits were mainly based on geographic region.
The new presentations are more organized around universal themes that connect everyone.
Level 0 now houses 2 permanent exhibitions. Things That Matter focuses on personal objects related to social issues such as heritage and migration. What's The Story looks at on the history and development of the museum.
The Tropenmuseum Junior (the oldest children's museum in the Netherlands) is also located on level 0, providing a convenient facility for young visitors.

Level 1 continues to feature geographical exhibitions on Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Indonesia.
Levels 1 and 2 also host long-term temporary exhibitions.
Overall, the museum benefits from reconstructions of local environments, giving a truly atmospheric flavor of life and history from around the world. The label is in English and Dutch.
A relaxation area
Level 0 houses the museum store and the De Tropen café-restaurant, offering a menu inspired by cultures from around the world. Here, you can enjoy a coffee or lunch before setting off to explore the museum. the marvellous works of art in this museum.

- Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The establishment remains closed on Mondays.

How do I get there?
You can reach the Tropenmuseum on foot by walking down the Planting Middenlaan then across the Mauritskade canal.
The tramway The nearest station is Alexanderplein, and you can take streetcar 14 from Amsterdam Central.
Alternatively, take streetcar 7 from Leidseplein or streetcar 19 from Amsterdam Sloterdijk.
The Tropenmuseum is a magnificent museum, but its slightly eccentric location to the east means that it probably doesn't get the number of visitors it deserves. In my opinion, it's one of Amsterdam's hidden gems and well worth a visit.
