The theater Tuschinski in Amsterdam is probably the most beautiful Art Nouveau cinema in the world!
And it's a must to watch a film in this magnificent theater.
Its construction was commissioned by Abraham Tuschinski in the early 20th century, who poured his heart and soul into the building.
He wasn't interested in another ordinary theater, but wanted to build a cinema of astonishing beauty.
Today, we discover the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam.
Tuschinski in Amsterdam: article summary
The Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam: an Art Nouveau building
Built in the Art Nouveau dramatic style, the Tushinsky Theatre is quite impressive from the outside.
But wait until you enter the lobby. It's a true Art Deco masterpiece: the murals, the dome, the lights and even the carpet are breathtaking.
The reception area is open to the public, so even if you're just passing through, I'd recommend taking a look inside.
In terms of architecture, the Tuschinski is almost the exact opposite of the contemporary EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam's other favorite cinema for tourists and locals alike.
Yet they have something in common. They both reflect what was perceived as an architectural masterpiece at the time, and therefore offer both an extraordinary cinematic experience.
Can you still watch films at the Tushinsky Theatre?
Yes, it's quite possible to watch a film in this cinema, and I highly recommend that you come and see one.
The Théâtre Tuschinski is now part of the Pathé cinema chain and shows mainly blockbusters.
If you get the chance, try to book a large one. It's a little more expensive, but a drink and a snack are included in the price.
Most films in the Netherlands are subtitled, so the sound is usually the original.
Before entering the auditorium, take a stroll through the ornate corridors surrounding the main auditorium.
Take the audio tour
If you're not a big cinema fan, or just don't have the time to go to a movie, you can take an audio tour in the morning. This is a 45-minute tour that tells the story of the Tushinsky Theater.
You'll discover secrets about its founder and architecture. During the tour, you can even enter the VIP room where Tom Cruise, Richard Gere and Carice van Houten drank their champagne at film premieres.
The audio tour is available in Dutch and English for €10. For this price, you can also enjoy a cup of coffee or tea during your visit.
