Discovering Volendam is a very popular excursion with tourists in Amsterdam. It's worth noting that the city is only about twenty kilometers of the capital, and has a charm that's well worth a visit.
Let me introduce you to this small fishing village of 20,000 souls and its special features!
Volendam presentation
Volendam is part of the municipality Edam-Volendam and is located on the coast, in the north-western province of the country known as North Holland.
This is where the company was founded, in the 14th centuryThis was the harbor of the neighboring commune of Edam (famous for its homonymous cheese) and is still the town's main attraction.
Nowadays, many visitors flock here to take advantage of its many attractions. museumsof its charms and various activities which I present below, it was home to some of the major artists of the early 20th century.
Among the most famous are Renoir and Picassowho came to Volendam to enjoy its calm and find inspiration.

The city center, with its typical streetsIt looks like a movie set. It's a delight to wander around, with a strong sense of disorientation. It's small, but oh so pleasant!
The port and its unusual boats
The port of Volendam, a testament to the importance of fishing in the area, boasts an attractive seafront promenade. You can cruise along the water, admire the unusual boats and take a break in a café to enjoy the peace and quiet and the scenery.
His traditional costume
The Volendam suit is more than just a traditional costume: it's an iconic costume, often associated with like the Netherlands ! The garment features several layers of striped patterned fabric, clogs and a famous lace bonnet.
You can try it out in boutiques that offer dress-up photo sessions, and take home a memorable souvenir photo!
Volendam Museum
To discover local history and traditions, take a tour of the Volendam Museum. It lets you discover the city as it was from 1850 to 1950, through the accessories and outfits that make up the folklore of the place.
What's more, temporary exhibitions (such as today's cigar ring) are frequently housed here.

Marken, via an excursion
Visitors often take advantage of their stay in the city to visit Markena peninsula just opposite.
With its village surrounded by water, its emblematic facades, its unmissable lighthouse and its Sabot museum, it's quite simply a must-see! a place not to be missed !
Ferries and buses run to the peninsula in around 30 minutes.
How do I get to Volendam easily from Amsterdam?
Volendam is just over a kilometre away. 20 kilometers from Amsterdam central station. And to reach this fishing town, there are several means of transport available:
- The bikeIf you want to pedal past charming villages and cross the famous local polders. Allow just over an hour for two-wheeler travel!
- Visit trainfrom Amsterdam Nord bus station, direction Volendam. It takes about 15 minutes to get there.
- With the bus from Central Station, line 316
- Visit carvia the N247 in 30 minutes
Should you visit Volendam during your stay in Amsterdam?
There are many things Things to see and do in Amsterdam and you'll already have your hands full for a short stay. However, if you have a little time on your hands, I strongly advise you to visit this city. It's really not far!
You'll discover a charming little town, far from the hustle and bustle of the capital, and a renowned local folklore often associated with the image of the Netherlands.
For me, a trip to Volendam (and if you can, Marken too) is a must. a great idea and if you hesitate between Volendam and The HagueI prefer the first, more authentic option.
