The site is surrounded by a wonderful legend.<\/p>\n<p>The name \"Magere Brug\" means \"skinny bridge\". Legend has it that a young girl <strong>had the bridge built because his sister lived on the other side of the canal. <\/strong>This way, she could see each other more often.<\/p>\n<p>Following this logic, couples who kiss in front of this little bridge stay together forever. At least, so the legend goes. So, if you have to choose <strong>a good place to kiss in Amsterdam, you might as well do it in front of this bridge!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc146004438\"><\/a><strong>A traditional manual-lift bridge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the past, two courageous bridge operators opened the bridge by hand using a chain pulley. The trick to closing the bridge was to lower both sections at the same time. This was very dangerous work. Today, the work is done by <strong>by a mechanical system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge is raised several times a day to allow large ships to pass. During your visit, you may be lucky enough to witness this live spectacle. Small boats from<a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-cruise\/\"> canal cruise<\/a> can pass under the bridge.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc146004439\"><\/a><strong>A bridge as beautiful by day as it is by night<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the evening, 1,200 bulbs illuminate the deck with a magical light. After sunset, the lights reflect magnificently on the Amstel River, adding a new dimension to the bridge. <strong>an even more romantic atmosphere!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want to enjoy a magnificent view of the little bridge, you'll have to go between <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/waterlooplein-market\/\">Waterlooplein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/rembrandtplein\/\">Rembrandtplein<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc146004440\"><\/a><strong>How do I get to the Magere Brug in Amsterdam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Magere Brug is located in the center of Amsterdam and crosses the river Amstel. It links Kerkstraat to Nieuwe Kerkstraat.<\/p>\n<p>You can get there on foot. The walk from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-centraal\/\">central station<\/a> takes about 25 minutes if you walk slowly.<\/p>\n<p>You can also get there by <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/tramway-amsterdam\/\">streetcar<\/a>.
