It was inaugurated in 1977, and as you can see from the plan above, it has only <strong>5 lines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-166\" src=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/plan-metro-amsterdam.png\" alt=\"map metro amsterdam\" width=\"700\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/plan-metro-amsterdam.png 700w, https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/plan-metro-amsterdam-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For tourists, this isn't necessarily the best mode of transport, since you can easily visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/what-to-do-in-amsterdam\/\">main attractions<\/a> on foot, <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/tramway-amsterdam\/\">by tramway<\/a> or in <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/bike-rental-amsterdam\/\">renting a bike<\/a>. But it can be a handy way to save time between two monuments!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Amsterdam metro facts and figures<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The network covers <strong>5 km<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>39 stations<\/strong>which serve the north and south of the city<\/li>\n<li>There are approximately <strong>90 million passengers\/year<\/strong>for approximately 250,000 daily trips<\/li>\n<li>Building the metro was extremely complex, due to the marshy ground beneath the city: that's why only <strong>9 stations<\/strong> are in the basement!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What metro lines are there in Amsterdam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Amsterdam metro has 5 lines: the oldest dates from <strong>1977<\/strong>the most recent was opened in <strong>2019<\/strong>\u00a0!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Line 50 (Ringlijn)<\/strong>This is the green line, serving 20 stations between the <em>Isolatorweg<\/em>\u00a0and the<\/li>\n<li><strong>Line 51 (Amstelveenlijn)<\/strong>This is the orange line, serving 29 stations between the <em>Isolatorweg<\/em> and the <em>Centraal Station<\/em> (Central Station).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Line 52 (Noord\/Zuidlijn)<\/strong>This is the blue line, serving 8 stations between\u00a0<em>Zuid<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Noord<\/em>. It is the only line serving the northern part of the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Line 53 (Gaasperplaslijn)<\/strong>This is the red line, serving 14 stations between <em>Gaasperplas<\/em> and <em>Centraal Station<\/em> (Central Station)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Line 54 (Geinlijn)<\/strong>yellow line, with 15 stops between Gein station and Central Station<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the exception of the green line, all lines intersect at Central Station. It's an interesting stopping-off point to remember when you're looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/hotel-amsterdam\/\">a hotel in Amsterdam<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How much does a metro ticket cost?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The unit price of a metro ticket in Amsterdam is quite high, as it will cost you <strong>3.20 euros \/ ticket<\/strong>valid for 1 hour. Over a stay, this can have an impact on your budget.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tickets to save money<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce costs if you take the metro:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A ticket <strong>round trip<\/strong> at the price of 6.50 euros<\/li>\n<li>Visit <strong>daily tickets<\/strong> available in 7 versions: <strong>1 day<\/strong> for 8 euros \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/visit-amsterdam-in-2-days\/\">2 days<\/a> for 13.50 euros \/ <strong>3 days<\/strong> for 19 euros \/ <strong>4 days<\/strong> for 26.50 euros \/ <strong>5 days<\/strong> for 33 euros \/ <strong>6 days<\/strong> for 37.50 euros \/ <strong>7 days<\/strong> for 41 euros<\/li>\n<li>Card <strong>child<\/strong> 24h : 4 euros<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Good to know<\/strong>\u00a0These tickets can be used for all means of transport - streetcar, bus or ferry - managed by the GVB company.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A season ticket to cut costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Visit <strong>OV-Chipkaart card<\/strong>which is an anonymous smart card. You buy it (7.50 euros) and then load the desired amount onto it. It saves you money, as the cost of the journey depends on the number of kilometers covered. It is valid for 5 years and can be used by several people, as it is not nominative.<\/p>\n<p>This card can be used on all means of transport in the city, but a minimum credit of 20 euros is required to take trains.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>All-inclusive metro and activity pass<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The easiest way, in my opinion, is to opt for <strong>a complete Pass<\/strong> which allows unlimited use of public transport while enjoying a variety of activities.<\/p>\n<p>This is the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/i-amsterdam-city-card\/\">I Amsterdam City Card<\/a>which allows you to take the metro, bus or streetcar without restriction. These include :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The famous <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/red-light-district-2\/\">Quartier Rouge<\/a>which you can reach with lines 51, 52 and 54, as far as the <em>Nieuwmarkt<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The museum zone, home to <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/van-gogh-museum\/\">Van Gogh Museum<\/a>the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/stedelijk-museum\/\">Stedejik Museum<\/a> or the unmissable <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/rijksmuseum\/\">Rijksmuseum<\/a>on line 52<\/li>\n<li>Attractions north of the city center, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/straat-museum\/\">Straat Museum<\/a> (dedicated to Street Art) and <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/adam-lookout\/\">the A'Dam Lookout<\/a> for a magnificent vantage point over the city, via line 52<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"7\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is it possible to reach the city center by metro from Amsterdam airport?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The airport <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/schiphol\/\">Schiphol<\/a> of Amsterdam is just under 20 km from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-city-center\/\">downtown<\/a>.
