Quite simply, because this little village is exactly what you'd expect from the Dutch countryside!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Introduction to the village of Giethoorn<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Giethoorn takes its name from the word <strong>geitenhoorns<\/strong>which refers to goat horns. It seems that a massive flood in 1170 was responsible for the discovery of countless horns in the area, earning the village its name.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, this small village was <strong>a Mecca for peat harvesting<\/strong> - Peat is an organic material used for construction, fuel and agriculture - and Giethoorn thrives on it.<\/p>\n<p>From the 17th century onwards, houses and wooden bridges were built, the village took shape and this <strong>agricultural land<\/strong> seems to have remained unchanged ever since. That's what's so breathtaking about a visit to Giethoorn. To reach the village, you have the following options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <strong>car<\/strong> from the capital, via the A6 and the N333, for a journey of around 1h30<\/li>\n<li>Visit <strong>train<\/strong> since <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-centraal\/\">Amsterdam Central Station<\/a> to Meppel, then by bus to destination (line 679)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No cars on site! You can walk or cycle in complete peace of mind!<br \/>\n<a name=\"4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Should you visit Giethoorn during your stay in Amsterdam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Giethoorn and the charming villages that make up the <strong>the province of Overijssel<\/strong> are well worth the detour. You'll discover <strong>a different facet of the country<\/strong>far from the hustle and bustle of the cities, with this countryside frozen in time.<\/p>\n<p>If you're planning excursions from Amsterdam, Giethoorn isn't the only option.
