The city then began to strip away the Catholic iconography and renovate to modest Calvinist standards.<\/p>\n<p>In Amsterdam, De <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/kerk\/\">Oude Kerk<\/a> and De <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/begijnhof\/\">Begijnhof<\/a> were completely dismissed and eventually presented to the town's Protestant congregation.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc141706962\"><\/a><strong>The first church built after the Reformation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although these buildings provided a suitable sanctuary, they still contained visible traces of Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p>Realizing this, the Amsterdam municipality decided to build several new churches specifically for this purpose. <strong>designed around Protestant services. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first building to go up was de Zuiderkerk, a huge church in Nieuwmarkt, completed in 1603.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc141706963\"><\/a><strong>Zuiderkerk: a jewel of Gothic architecture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The church was designed by Hendrick de Keyser as a tribute to Southern Gothic architecture.<\/p>\n<p>This stylistic choice was combined with motifs typically associated with the Dutch Renaissance, resulting in a monumental building that has effectively <strong>captured the distinctive aesthetics of both movements. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1614, a gigantic spire was added to De Zuiderkerk and forty years later, a large carillon of bells was installed inside its tower.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc141706964\"><\/a><strong>A church at the heart of popular culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>De Zuiderkerk appears in many famous works of art and has long been associated with Rembrandt.<\/p>\n<p>The artist built his house on a street parallel to the church, and was a regular visitor to the Zuiderkerk. Three of his children are actually buried in the church crypt, alongside several other famous figures from Dutch history.<\/p>\n<p>On a visit to Amsterdam in 1874, Claude Monet decided to immortalize the church and the <strong>created an elaborate watercolor of the canal leading to the bell tower.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc141706965\"><\/a><strong>A building always in the spotlight<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Today, the church is open to the public and acts as a cultural center, welcoming <strong>events, concerts and exhibitions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc141706966\"><\/a><strong>What are the opening hours?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can visit the Zuiderkerk church:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monday to Friday <strong>9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Saturday <strong>noon to 4 p.m.<\/strong>s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc141706967\"><\/a><strong>How do I get there?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Getting to the Zuiderkerk church is easy. You can borrow :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-metro\/\">metro<\/a> via <strong>lines 51, 53 and 54<\/strong> and exit at Nieuwmarkt station<\/li>\n<li>visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/bus-amsterdam\/\">bus<\/a>\u00a0<strong>14, 314 and 316<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the church is just a few steps from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/house-museum-of-rembrandt\/\">Rembrandt house museum<\/a>Alternatively, you can walk to the site in just a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>You can also reach the church on foot from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/red-light-district-2\/\">red-light district<\/a>the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/begijnhof\/\">b\u00e9guinage<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-centraal\/\">Amsterdam Central Station<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Zuiderkerk church is a must-see in Amsterdam.
