Today, its inhabitants still call it Mokkum. The city takes its name from a 13th-century dam on the Amstel River. After obtaining the rights in the 1300s, the town quickly developed into a prosperous trading city.<\/p>\n<p>During the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam was<strong> one of the world's largest and most important cities, packed with museums. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tourists from all over the world still come to Amsterdam to visit these museums. Internationally, Amsterdam is also known as a tolerant and liberal city. <strong>because of Pride Amsterdam and the coffee shops.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mobility: one of the city's spearheads<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The city lies at the mouth of the Amstel and IJ rivers. From the port of Amsterdam, you can reach the North Sea via the North Sea Canal.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands' most important airport is located to the south of the city, <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/schiphol\/\">Schiphol airport<\/a> in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. The Zuiderzee is now called the Ijsselmeer.<\/p>\n<p>The Amstel branched off into the Zuiderzee. In these arms, or delta, an area was created where fish were abundant. These are the reasons why <strong>people began to live in the delta hamlets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 12th and 13th centuries, a flood defense structure was installed to protect the inhabitants from tidal waves.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc143542250\"><\/a><strong>History of Amsterdam: the creation of the canals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Amsterdam boasts a hundred kilometers of canals, ninety islands and fifteen hundred bridges. The four main canals, Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel, form <strong>concentric semicircles around the old town center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This part of the city center is called the Canal Belt. More than 1,500 monumental buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries can be found along these canals.<\/p>\n<p>The history of Amsterdam's canals is an interesting one. Amsterdam's famous canal network dates back to the 17th century. The tidal wave of newcomers brought with it <strong>housing shortage and lack of space. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This forced the city council to draw up an expansion plan that would eventually make the city five times larger. The plan, which combined utility and beauty, got off to a cautious start in the late 16th century.<\/p>\n<p>Major expansion didn't follow until 1613, when a new district was developed west of the canals, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/jordaan-district-amsterdam\/\">Jordaan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Het Grachtenhuis museum is where the unique history of Amsterdam's canals and canal houses is told. The first great canal <strong>was called the Herengracht.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc143542251\"><\/a><strong>Amsterdam today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Today, Amsterdam is one of Europe's most visited cities, attracting millions of tourists every year.<\/p>\n<p>Tourists come for attractions like the coffeeshops, the red light districts, museums like the Rijksmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/van-gogh-museum\/\">Van Gogh museum<\/a>the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/maison-anne-frank\/\">Anne Frank House<\/a>or the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/musee-nemo\/\">Nemo Science Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Summer in Amsterdam also offers residents and tourists the chance to visit beaches like Amsterdam Beach, Zandvoort and Scheveningen, as well as picnic and relax in parks like <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/vondelpark\/\">VondelPark<\/a>Westerpark, Saphartipark and Oosterpark.<\/p>\n<p>Events such as the annual Keukenhof and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjouramsterdam.fr\/en\/amsterdam-light-festival\/\">festival of lights<\/a> Amsterdam also offers a chance to admire the country's tulips and the luminous works of art on its famous canals.<\/p>\n<p>Amsterdam has a rich history.
