Located next to Leidseplein, The Melkweg hosts hundreds of concerts, theatrical performances and film screenings every year.
With over 50 years in business, let's take a look back at the history of Melkweg and its building.
Melkweg in Amsterdam: article summary
Melkweg: a modern conversion
The building was opened in the 19th century as a sugar refinery, before being bought by the dairy company in 1920. It was then a milk factory until its closure in 1969.
In 1970, a group of young people moved into the empty building for the summer. This was the beginning of the Melkweg we know and love today. At the time, Amsterdam was considered a cultural center, as the true center of the art world.
Young people came from all over the world to gather and play a part in this new cultural center. It combined and celebrated a variety of different artistic disciplines.
A special place for artists from all over the world
During that summer, the building housed a café, restaurant, music room and theater. Due to the success of The Melkweg in 1970, the center reopened for the summers of 1971 and 1972, before becoming a permanent fixture in 1973.
With the name "melkweg", the group of young people who discovered the building have honored its original purpose and history.
The building has undergone many changes since its opening. It has been adapted to suit its new function. The Melkweg now houses two concert halls, a cinema, a multidisciplinary hall and an exhibition space.
Melkweg: over 50 years of history
Over the past 50 years, The Melkweg has become one of Amsterdam's most important event venues. It has hosted artists from all over the world in a variety of disciplines, styles and genres.

Club nights celebrating everything from reggae to hip-hop welcome music lovers all year round. Through these events, the venue aims to bridge the gap between underground styles and the general public.
In 2019, The Melkweg organized more than 1,250 events, featuring over 1,600 artistsgroups and creators. They welcomed over 540,000 guests. The venue clearly continues to play an important role in the Dutch capital's cultural landscape.
A slightly spoiled 50th anniversary
Melkweg turned 50 during the coronavirus pandemic. It was therefore unable to organize the events originally planned to celebrate the occasion. However, the anniversary was still celebrated thanks to the live broadcast.
The containment marks the first time in Melkweg's history that the doors are closed and programming suspended for such a long time.
