Practical information about eating out in Amsterdam
Here are a few things you need to know eating out in Amsterdam without making any mistakes. The rules are quite similar to those in France and elsewhere in Europe, but it's worth pointing them out!
What time is dinner in Amsterdam?
The Dutch eat early onWith some dinners taking place at 6pm! If this sounds more like aperitif time to you, don't worry about the restaurants. Most of them stay open until at least 10pm.
What about tipping in Amsterdam?
No special rule for the tip, which, as in France, depends mainly on your satisfaction and your willingness to leave one. It's not expected, nor is it compulsory, but it's always appreciated when the service is good.
A one-off bill
A small local specificity to know concerns the payment in a restaurant: it is customary to pay the bill all at oncewithout dividing it. You can do your accounts later if necessary. What's more, in Amsterdam restaurants, payment is generally made by credit card.
